About the Show

“You Speak Very Good English!” is a bold blend of storytelling and poetry that challenges stereotypes faced by Spanish-speaking immigrants. It confronts backhanded compliments, mislabeling, and reductive views of Latin America, offering an unfiltered exploration of identity, resistance, and the struggle to reclaim the narrative.

Friday, April 18: Carolina Quiroga will be joined by musical guest, O•VAD•YA .
Saturday, April 19: Carolina Quiroga will be joined by Poetry Cabaret.

Both performances will feature an optional post-show talkback.

About the Artists

Carolina Quiroga is a dynamic bilingual storyteller dedicated to weaving the vibrant threads of Latin American heritage into the fabric of contemporary storytelling. As a Performer, Teacher-Artist, Cuentista, and Writer, Carolina aims to be a cultural ambassador, using the art of storytelling to connect hearts, spark creativity, and celebrate the universal human experience.

O•VAD•YA features powerful, transcendent acoustic music with delays and loopers to world-influenced psychedelic rock with horns and electric violin that reshapes your spine.  Join this band for a highly unusual-yet-addictive music set the likes you will not have heard before!

Audience quotations: “I really enjoy Ovadya! This is one of the most unusual sounds I’ve come across — unusual in all the right ways: great musicians, great music, and a great sound that is uniquely theirs. A new favorite!” “This is the most intense, emotional band I have ever experienced! I giggle, cry and become introspective with every song! The musicianship is over the top wonderful and the passion that exudes from each member is immeasurable. If you haven’t experienced this wonderful team of women… do so as soon as you can! You don’t want to miss out.”

Poetry Cabaret Collective is a troupe of poets, dancers, and musicians creating wild and intelligent shows that challenge norms and enlighten minds. Poetry Cabaret began in 2012, organized by poets Caleb Beissert and James McKay. Since then, iterations of the Poetry Cabaret have enthralled audiences at such venues as Capital Fringe, Asheville Fringe Arts Festival, The Magnetic Theatre, and Staufferstadt Arts.

About the Partnership

This performance is part of an ongoing collaboration between Asheville Fringe Festival and Asheville Community Theatre. Each month, Asheville Fringe takes over 35below to present innovative, genre-defying work from local, regional, and national artists. The partnership transforms 35below into a home for adventurous performances and new artistic voices.

About Asheville Fringe

The Asheville Fringe Arts Festival began in 2003 after Susan and Giles Collard of Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre experienced Fringe festivals in San Francisco and Toronto. They started Asheville’s Fringe in one venue, the beloved BeBe Theatre. But the following year, it expanded to other venues. The Festival is now a multi-day, multi-venue performing arts extravaganza, with performances in theatres, galleries, clubs and odd spaces that even include the LaZoom bus.

Asheville Fringe continues to ask artists to explore the edges of their work, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. We strongly suggest that you see more than one Fringe show because of the incredible variety of artists and types of work. One show is just not enough to really have the total Fringe Festival experience!
