About The Show

Ready, set, fry! It’s time for the annual “Hot Wang Festival” in Memphis, Tennessee, and Cordell Crutchfield knows he has the wings that’ll make him king. Supported by his beau Dwayne and their culinary clique, The New Wing Order, Cordell is marinating and firing up his frying pan in a bid to reclaim the crispy crown. When Dwayne takes in his troubled nephew however, it becomes a recipe for disaster. Suddenly, a first place trophy isn’t the only thing Cordell risks losing. Winner of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

About The Narrative

The Hot Wing King the first installment of The Narrative. A series of staged readings featuring BIPOC playwrights, performers, and directors – produced in partnership with Different Strokes Performing Arts Collective. Each event in The Narrative is lightly catered and features a post-show talk back. Tickets are $10 with all proceeds going to the artists.

Content Awareness: The Hot Wing King contains descriptions of police brutality as well as uses of the n-word as an expression of affection among Black friends, brief uses of ableist language, and a single use of a slur for a gay man.

Asheville Community Theatre is partnering with Different Strokes Performing Arts Collective to present The Narrative, a series of staged readings of plays written by BIPOC playwrights. The Narrative celebrates BIPOC theatremakers and creates paid opportunities for BIPOC performers and directors in WNC.
