Our Character Insights section is designed to help you prepare for Hello, Dolly! Auditions with confidence. Each character card includes a brief description, vocal range, and age range to help you find the best fit for your voice and strengths. We encourage you to audition for any role you feel is right for you! Casting is open to all, and we welcome performers of all genders, ethnicities, ages (14+) and body types.

A happy-go-lucky, cheery group of people that help the story flow. Ensemble members will play a variety of roles, including waiters and chorus members.

DOLLY GALLAGHER LEVI
Character Age: 35-50
Vocal Range: Alto/Soprano
A matchmaker, widow, meddler, and opportunist. She is life-loving, commanding, and a strong stage presence.

HORACE VANDERGELDER
Character Age: 40-60
Vocal Range: Baritone
A well-known half-a-millionaire. A gruff widower who is set in his ways. He owns the feed store.

CORNELIUS HACKL
Character Age: 30-35
Vocal Range: Baritone
Head clerk at the Feed Store. He is energetic, enthusiastic, and adventurous.

BARNABY TUCKER
Character Age: 18-30
Vocal Range: Baritone
Assistant to Cornelius at the Feed Store. He is naive, energized, and a follower.

IRENE MOLLOY
Character Age: 30-35
Vocal Range: Soprano
Irene owns the Hat Stop. She is a beautiful, smart, and fun-loving widow.

MINNIE FAY
Character Age: 18-30
Vocal Range: Soprano
Irene’s assistant. She is naive, straight-laced, fresh, and a follower.

AMBROSE KEMPER

Vocal Range: Tenor
Ambrose is a struggling artist. He is good-natured and accommodating. He wants to marry Ermengarde.

ERMENGARDE
Character Age: 18-30
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano
Horace Vandergelder’s young niece. She is emotional and longs for her independence. She wants to marry Ambrose.

ERNESTINA MONEY
Character Age: 30-35
Vocal Range: Alto/Soprano
She is accommodating and a good-time girl.

RUDOLPH “RUDY” REISENWEBER
Character Age: 40-60
Vocal Range: Bass
Maitre’d of the Harmonia Gardens. He is proper and commanding.

MISS ROSE

Vocal Range: Alto
A street vendor who is an old-time friend of Dolly.
