In 2007, Murphy Funkhouser Capps quit her job and hit the road with 500 pounds of baggage hooked to her Subaru to take Crazy Bag, her auto-biographical one woman show about her journey from minister’s daughter to rebellion to redemption across the country.
In its premiere at the Colorado Theatre Festival, Crazy Bag won Best Set, Best Director, and All State Actress. The show played to acclaim in Breckenridge, Aspen, Denver, Albuquerque and Oklahoma City and was accepted into the 2008 San Francisco Fringe Festival. Reviewed as “hilarious, heart breaking and heart warming,” Crazy Bag was nominated for Best Solo Performance of 2008 by the Denver Post.
The tour brought Murphy to back Asheville, where her journey had begun two decades before, to perform at both the NC Stage Company and ACT. In Asheville, Murphy met her “matching luggage” and started a family in Black Mountain, NC. In her second year of marriage, she learned that her husband had an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer.
Murphy wrote a second play, Carry On, which provides insights into what to do when life falls apart and you must put it back together … piece by piece … again.
Carry On‘s first act will re-tell the story of Crazy Bag, for those who missed the first show.
